Join our dynamic and dedicated team as we continue to develop capacity within the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation and the greater unceded Algonquin territory. With our child well-being law, Nigig Nibi Ki-win, now fully in force, the community embraces a step in reconciliation by reclaiming jurisdiction over the safety and well-being of our children, youth and families.

We are recruiting for an Outreach and Communications Lead. This is a one-year term position.

The Outreach and Communications Lead plays a key role in the planning, development, and implementation of community outreach and communications strategies that support Nigig Nibi Ki-win Gamik. This role oversees a small communications team.  

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Lead the planning and execution of community engagement sessions, events, and outreach activities
  • Coordinate communications with Algonquins of Pikwakanagan
  • Build relationships with members and community groups
  • Utilize community feedback to inform strategy and improve communications and programming
  • Oversee the creation of messages and materials that reflect the values, voice and priorities of Nigig Gamik
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for media and external communication requests
  • Provide reciprocal communications support for other events and programs within Pikwakanagan
  • Supervise and mentor the outreach and communications assistant
  • Delegate tasks and provide guidance to ensure day-to-day outreach and communications are executed effectively
  • Collaborate with internal departments and external partners to support cross-functional initiatives
  • Support the development of written content including press releases, newsletters, reports and other official communications
  • Ensure consistency in tone, messaging and branding across all channels
  • Contribute to the creation of promotional and educational materials
  • Support work to develop aspects of the web presence
  • Monitor and evaluate communication efforts and engagement outcomes
  • Prepare reports and recommendations for leadership and funding partners
  • Manage communication timelines, documentation, and data tracking related to community feedback and engagement
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in communications, public relations, marketing, indigenous studies, or a related field
  • A minimum of 2-5 years of experience in communications, community engagement or a related role
  • Experience supervising staff
  • Experience managing social media for organizations and projects
  • Strong understanding of community-based engagement strategies
  • Knowledge of communications strategies and C-912 capacity building initiatives
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Exceptional written skills and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills
  • Proficient with digital communication tools and platforms
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and evaluate projects
  • An acceptable vulnerable sector check
  • Graphic design and content development experience are assets
  • Experience working with First Nation people or groups is an asset
