The Petawawa Military Family Resource Centre (PMFRC) is a non-profit organization with the responsibility of addressing the needs of military families. We provide programs and services that serve, involve, and advocate for our military community, its members, and families, and address the unique military lifestyle challenges, resulting in an enhanced quality of life. The PMFRC envisions a community of strong, capable, resilient Canadian Armed Forces families.
We are recruiting for a Family Counsellor. This is full-time position working 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday rom 8:00am to 4:00pm. Occasional evenings will be required.
The Family Counsellor is responsible for the development, implementation and delivery of support services, programs and crisis intervention to Canadian Armed Forces families. Family members may be coping with illness, injury, special needs, mental health, emotional, and couple and family issues.
As a Family Counsellor, you will conduct sessions and/or short-term support to individuals and families in crisis in multiple areas. This includes family violence, child abuse, critical incidents, suicidal ideation and depression, bereavement, marital issues, separation and divorce issues, special needs, severe behaviour disorders, family of origin dysfunction, substance abuse, blended families, families who are coping with illness, injury or death, and other military lifestyle issues.
Additional responsibilities:
- Coordinate and provide referral and advocacy for clients requiring specialized and professional services within the community
- Support families in person or through other mediums in one-on-one, couples, and family or group environments
- Offer short-term counselling, support and intervention
- Use recognized, evidence-based models and clinical approaches
- Develop customized intervention plans that assist clients in establishing and achieving personal objectives

- Bachelor’s degree in social work, counselling, psychotherapy, psychology, or a related field
- Several years of experience providing direct services in social work, counselling, or related services
- Registration and good standing with the local regulatory body (OCSWSSW or the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario)
- English is mandatory, French is a strong asset
- Clear criminal record check, enhanced reliability security clearance and vulnerable sector screening
- Valid driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle, and appropriate driver’s insurance

- Crisis intervention and risk management
- Emergency response to critical incidents
- Data, record-keeping and retrieval techniques
- Measuring and analyzing service performance
- Networking with community resources
- Working with a multi-disciplinary team
- Psychosocial counselling using evidence-based treatment approaches
- Client assessment and case management
