The Township of Madawaska Valley is currently accepting applications for a Lead Hand-Operator. This is a full-time position.

The Lead Hand-Operator will operate a variety of heavy equipment and trucks utilized in road construction, general maintenance and winter maintenance.  In addition, the Lead Hand-Operator provides guidance, oversight and direction to public works staff as assigned.

Responsibilities:

• Operates a variety of heavy equipment
• Maintains good condition of roads during winter months by snow plowing, sanding, salting and shoveling of roads, sidewalks and parking lots under municipal jurisdiction
• Operates equipment for road construction projects, paving preparation and gravel resurfacing
• Conducts general maintenance functions for roads, waste sites, parks and other municipal property including building retaining walls, maintaining fences, repairing and installing signs, cold patching
• Is responsible for supervising or directing the work of others as assigned with oversight from the operations supervisor
• Discusses plans, priorities and work schedules with the operations supervisor, including appropriate equipment use
• Identifies road maintenance problems and proposes cost-effective and practical solutions
• Carries out work assignments using a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment, plus a variety of hand and power tools

• Possession of a valid DZ driver’s license
• Previous supervisory experience is a strong asset
• Roads-related courses and Ontario Road School and supervisory courses, or willing to obtain, are assets
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work independently
• Ability to be on call 24 hours per day combined with flexibility in hours of work
• Able to work overtime and unusual hours in the event of emergency requests or weather conditions
• Basic computer skills such as word processing, spreadsheets, using printers and other work-related equipment, or looking up information online
