Join our dynamic and dedicated team as we continue to develop capacity within the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation and the greater unceded Algonquin territory. With our child well-being law, Nigig Nibi Ki-win, now fully in force, the community embraces a step in reconciliation by reclaiming jurisdiction over the safety and well-being of our children, youth and families.
We are recruiting for a Prevention Worker. This is a full-time position.
Position Summary
The Prevention Worker is responsible for providing preventative services to Nigig Gamik clients in a collaborative and ongoing manner, or from time to time in crisis situations. This role ensures support to children, youth and families with flexibility and a prompt response. This role includes participating in culturally appropriate programming with a holistic approach that promotes and supports a healthy family lifestyle.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with emergency services to stabilize crisis issues of individuals
- Provides intensive short-term crisis support services
- Provides short-term follow-up and support to individuals following a crisis assessment
- Provides resources and supports to family members of individuals in crisis
- Assesses client needs and general well-being, prior to the development of appropriate recovery plans
- Facilitates and monitors crisis recovery plans
- Provide linkages to longer-term resources for those individuals in crisis
- Complete all administrative duties and responsibilities including notes on active files and incident reports
- Works with other departments to ensure quality service delivery and relevant programming is captured
- Participates on relevant boards, committees and community development projects
- Promotes and advertises relevant programs and activities to clients who may be interested in participating
- Participates in ongoing training and education
- Participates in cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity training

- Post-secondary education in mental health or social work
- A minimum of one year of successful experience working with children, youth and families, preferably in a First Nation setting
- Expertise in mental health or mental illness and treatment modalities, with a willingness to participate in additional training that is provided
- Willing to be coached
- Able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends
- A minimum of a valid class G driver’s license and access to a dependable vehicle
- A clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening
- Certification in CPR and First Aid or willingness to obtain
- Experience with computer operations and software programs, preferably Microsoft 365 Suite
- An understanding of intergenerational violence and trauma in Indigenous communities
- Comprehensive knowledge of social service resources within the Renfrew County region
- Can coordinate, plan and facilitate sessions, clinics, presentations, workshops and activities
- Excellent interpersonal skills
