The St. Francis Memorial Hospital (SFMH) is a 20-bed, fully accredited facility located 1.5 hours west of Ottawa, serving a catchment area of over 10,000.  SFMH provides medical and complex continuing care as well as extensive ambulatory care with over 12,000 emergency and clinic visits per year.

We are recruiting for Personal Support Workers. These are permanent, part-time, and casual positions.

Personal Support Workers deliver basic nursing care for patients of the hospice and hospital.

Duties include:

  • Provide supportive care to patients and families, including those with dementia, patients in palliative care, and individuals with life-limiting illness and /disease.
  • Participate in the change of shift report
  • Keep the patient’s white board updated
  • Assist with mechanical and physical lifts or transfers
  • Observe and report changes in the patient’s condition
  • Assist with bathing and routine personal hygiene needs
  • Assist with restorative care activities to support individual patient goals and other rehabilitative measures
  • Change bed linens, towels, and perform laundry-related tasks
  • Obtain and label non-invasive specimens
  • Answer call bells and respond to patients’ requests
  • Assist with colostomies, ileostomies and urostomies
Qualifications
  • Successful completion of a recognized PSW program or HCA program
  • Knowledge of department and hospital policies and procedures
  • Previous geriatric and palliative care experience is an asset
  • Current CPR or BCLS certification, level C
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to understand, interpret and carry out written and verbal instruction
  • Ability to set priorities
  • Ability to work independently and to perform duties within the physical demands of the work area
  • Basic knowledge of established infection control and occupational health and safety practices
  • Basic knowledge of sterility and aseptic techniques
  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to multitask
  • Compliance with SFMH vaccination policy
  • A recent satisfactory voluntary sector check
